Will PlayStation 5 Be Discontinued After PS6 Launch? Here’s What Sony Says
The PlayStation 5 (PS5) has been one of Sony’s most successful gaming consoles, selling nearly 75 million units since its launch in 2020. Despite challenges like the global chip shortage and the COVID-19 pandemic, the PS5 has remained strong in the market. Sony has also released updated versions — the PS5 Slim in 2023 and the PS5 Pro in 2024 — offering improved performance and features for gamers.
But now, with the PlayStation 6 (PS6) expected in the near future, fans are wondering: will the PS5 disappear?
PS5 Will Stay — Just Like PS4
According to Hideaki Nishino, the CEO of the Platform Business Group at Sony Interactive Entertainment, the PS5 will not be going away any time soon. In an interview with Famitsu, he said the PS5 will continue to be supported, just like the PlayStation 4, which remained popular even after the launch of the PS5.
However, Nishino also explained that Sony won’t delay the launch of new consoles just because older ones are still being used. “It’s important to offer new technology when it’s ready, while still supporting existing consoles,” he said.
Balancing New and Old
Nishino explained that the release of new hardware depends on how quickly technology advances. He said Sony’s strategy is to provide a mix of long-lasting consoles and cutting-edge technology.
He pointed out that the PS4 was highly automated during production, which helped maintain its quality and extend its lifespan. The PS5, he added, was automated from the beginning, making it reliable for long-term use as well.
“We want to continue offering both — consoles that last a long time and exciting new technology,” Nishino said.
What This Means for Gamers
In simple terms, the PlayStation 5 will still be around even after the PS6 comes out. Gamers don’t need to worry about their PS5 becoming useless overnight. Sony plans to support it for years to come, while also moving forward with new innovations through the next-generation PS6.
